About this work
As in the companion pieces, this beetle is shown with wings fully spread into four lobed panels, seen head-on with curling gold antennae, round grey eyes, and thin jointed legs tipped with claws splayed outward. The insect again sits alone on a bare black ground filling the rest of the canvas.
The wings carry a looser, more painterly pattern of swirling blue and teal brushstrokes over cream, closer to a marbled ornament than a literal wing texture, with a deep blue, dotted thorax at the centre. Loaded, textured strokes and strong tonal contrast against the black ground give the insect a glowing, jewel-like presence.
