About this work
The beetle is shown frontally with its wings fully spread into four broad, rounded lobes, thin curling antennae reaching upward and small clawed legs splayed to the sides. The insect fills nearly the whole square canvas, isolated against a flat black ground with no other setting.
Each wing is patterned like blue-and-white porcelain, with scrolling floral motifs in cobalt and turquoise over a cream ground, while the domed thorax is picked out in gold with raised dotted texture. Thick, confident brushstrokes and glossy highlights give the creature the presence of a jewelled ornament glowing in the surrounding darkness.
