About this work
A tight group of women and girls in bright red traditional dress, tall beaded kokoshniks and pearl necklaces cluster together, several with eyes closed and heads tilted as if in prayer. A brown bear wearing a wreath of flowers rests among them at the right, its paw resting on a woman's arm, while wooden village houses and a dim horizon fill the background.
The canvas is dominated by saturated reds and deep browns, with the ornate costume patterns, jewelry and floral crowns picked out in fine, decorative detail against loosely brushed architecture and sky. The close framing, closed eyes and ritual-like embrace of the animal give the scene a solemn, ceremonial mood rather than a straightforward genre gathering.
