About this work

A seated ballerina in a voluminous white tutu leans forward to fasten the ribbon of her pointe shoe, her bare shoulders and upswept hair catching the light. Behind her rises a tall gilt-framed mirror reflecting a blurred greenish interior, while the wooden floor grounds the scene in warm ochre tones.

Loose, confident brushstrokes build the tutu from overlapping strokes of white, lilac and pale blue, contrasted with warm flesh tones on the skin. Soft light falls from the left, dissolving the mirror's reflection into abstract patches of colour, creating an intimate, contemplative mood typical of backstage ballet studies.
