About this work
Three ballerinas in identical blue off-the-shoulder tutus share a shadowy rehearsal space: one stands at a wooden barre, hand resting on the rail as she glances back; a second, seen from behind with long red hair and a bow at her waist, faces a dark mirror at left; a third sits on the floor, bent forward to fix her ribbon.
Oil paint is layered thickly in varied turquoise and cobalt strokes across the tutus, set against a smoky charcoal-grey wall and warm plum floor. Light falls unevenly across the group, picking out shoulders and faces while leaving the background loose and atmospheric, giving the backstage scene a hushed, absorbed mood.
