About this work
A young ballerina is seated in three-quarter profile, hair pulled into a low bun, wearing a strapless white tutu with a ruffled bodice. Her head is bowed and her eyes are lowered toward her outstretched hand, resting quietly rather than performing. The tulle skirt spreads around her in loose folds, filling most of the lower canvas.
Thick, visible brushstrokes build the white and pale blue-grey tutu almost sculpturally, while the warm ochre and rose tones of the blurred background suggest a stage or studio without describing it. Light falls softly across her shoulder and collarbone, and the loose, painterly handling keeps the focus on her quiet, introspective pose rather than on detail.
