About this work
A young ballerina in a leotard and loosely gathered tutu sits on the ground, torso folded forward as she rests her forehead against crossed forearms propped on a raised knee. Her other leg trails across the floor, the ruffled net skirt reduced to a few sketched contour lines, and her face, tilted in three-quarter view, wears a tired, downcast expression.
The drawing is built almost entirely in soft grey and warm sepia tones, the head and upper body worked up with careful tonal modeling while the skirt and legs dissolve into loose, unfinished contour lines on bare paper. The contrast between the fully resolved face and the sketch-like remainder gives the study a quiet, searching, academic feel.
