About this work
A dense dark-green conifer dominates the foreground of this hillside view, beside a bare branch touched with yellow autumn leaves. Past the trees a small pavilion with a peaked red roof sits on a terrace, with tiled rooftops, a whitewashed wall, and a faint figure near a path. Distant hills and a pale sky close the scene.
Pastel is worked in soft, smudged strokes for the sky and hills and in denser marks for the conifer, with touches of orange and yellow for the autumn light. The palette stays muted - greys, ochres, dull greens - warmed only by the pavilion's red roof, giving the view a loose, atmospheric, autumnal calm.
