About this work
Dark firs, a tall poplar and small trees turning yellow and gold line a ridge above a wide, winding river valley. A single red-roofed cottage sits tucked into the wooded slope on the far side, and plowed fields in the foreground curve down toward the water under a soft pastel sky.
The middle-distance hillside is rendered as a dense patchwork of red, violet, ochre and green dabs suggesting turning foliage, while the sky is laid in broad, quiet strokes of pink and pale blue. Brushwork throughout is textured and varied in size, from fine touches describing distant trees to looser strokes in the foreground fields, giving the view a rich, autumnal glow.
