About this work
Leafless trees and thickets stand partly submerged in a flooded river channel, their trunks and branches doubled in near-perfect reflection on the calm water. Beyond the flooded foreground, pale green fields stretch toward a low horizon, with a stand of trees on the left marking where dry land begins. A grassy hummock breaks the water's surface at the center, anchoring the reflection.
The palette is soft and cool, built from greys, pale greens and warm browns in the tangled branches. Light is diffused and even, typical of an overcast early-spring day, and the brushwork is detailed in the foreground trunks while loosening into soft washes in the water and distant fields. The overall effect is quiet and slightly bare, capturing the moment before full foliage returns.
