About this work
A narrow wooden plank walkway juts out from the foreground into a still lake, with a single figure standing at its far end, back to the viewer, looking out over the water. Golden and rust-colored birch and pine trees line the far shore, their trunks and leaves mirrored almost perfectly in the glassy surface below, splitting the composition symmetrically between land and reflection.
Warm oranges and yellows of the autumn foliage play against cool blues in the water and sky, applied in short, loaded brushstrokes typical of plein-air painting. Light falls evenly across the scene, and the perfect stillness of the reflection gives the whole view a quiet, meditative calm.
