About this work
A woman wearing a red knitted cap sits with her back to the viewer on a wooden veranda, leaning into the frame of an open window. A woven bamboo blind is rolled up overhead, a glass jar with a sprig of purple flowers rests on the sill beside her, and beyond the columns a sunlit rural landscape with golden haystacks recedes toward a pale sky.
Thick, loaded strokes of violet, teal, ochre and moss green build the striped blind, porch posts and foliage with heavy impasto. Dappled light rakes across the shaded interior while the view outside glows warm and bright, and the contrast between cool shadow and golden distance gives the scene a quiet, hazy midday calm.
