About this work
A cluttered arrangement of studio objects - jars, tins, and cloth-wrapped shapes - fills tiered shelves or a workbench, seen close up and compressed almost flat. A pale bundle of cloth or paper sits at upper left, a red and blue container stands at center, and smaller vessels and boxes crowd the lower shelves in a dense, grid-like arrangement.
Color arrives in thick, squared-off patches of ochre, slate blue, white, and touches of red, laid on with a palette knife so heavily the surface reads as relief. The tight, compartmentalized composition and dense impasto give the still life a busy, workmanlike intensity, evoking the clutter of a working studio corner.
