About this work

A dense screen of trees with reddish autumn foliage stands in front of a pale church building, its gabled roof and arched windows just visible between the trunks. To the left, a taller red-brick structure with rounded window openings is partly cut off by the canvas edge, and a shadowed path runs along the base of the trees.

Feathery, broken strokes of pink, violet, blue-grey and cream build the foliage and hazy sky, applied with both oil and pastel to leave a dry, granular texture across the canvas. The screen of color in front of the architecture creates a soft, veiled light that gives the park a quiet, muted autumn atmosphere.
