About this work
A weathered stone archway, pitted and cracked like ancient masonry, frames a huddled mass of nude bodies lying in shadow at its base. The figures are pressed together, limbs entangled, heads bowed and hands raised to faces, evoking bodies caught in a single moment of collapse. Above the arch a small square of gold leaf sits isolated against a grey-green wall.
Thick acrylic impasto builds the arch into a rough, cratered relief, while the huddled bodies are modeled in flatter, sepia-brown tones that blend into the dark ground beneath them. The narrow palette of greys, ochres and browns, lit only by the small gold square, gives the scene a somber, funerary weight.
