Approximation

A heavily built nude figure is curled into a tight, rounded knot, knees drawn to chest and head bowed into crossed arms, filling most of the lower two-thirds of the sheet. Above, a small, sketchy vignette shows a row of industrial buildings with a tall brick chimney under a dark horizontal band of sky, set apart from the dominant curled form below.

Dense cross-hatched strokes of ochre, rust, blue, and violet colored pencil build up the volume and shadow of the folded body, leaving the paper's white ground bare around it. The rough, vigorous hatching and compressed, almost architectural posture of the figure give the drawing a tense, brooding physicality.
