About this work
A cracked, weathered plaster mask of a woman's face fills the center of the panel, her hair rendered in loose ochre waves under a red band, one side broken away to reveal rough plaster beneath. The image is framed by a painted border of grey scrollwork and a rope-patterned edge, imitating an antique decorative relief.
The palette is dominated by warm ochres, greys and dulled golds, with the chipped texture of the mask built up through textured paint that mimics real plaster damage. Soft, even light leaves the face half in shadow, and the ornamental border is painted flatter and more graphic than the mask itself, giving the piece a hushed, timeworn feel.
