About this work
A weathered animal or bird-like skull with a long, hooked beak and hollow eye sockets dominates the center of the composition, angled diagonally against a chaotic tangle of dark branches and foliage. To its right, partially emerging from shadow, is a nude female torso, only the shoulder, chest and upper arm visible before the form dissolves back into the surrounding darkness.
Ochre, bone-white and umber tones model the skull with dense, textured paint, while the background is scraped and layered in near-black and grey, blurring any sense of place. Light falls starkly on the skull's ridges, the brightest, most legible form in the picture, giving the image an unsettling, mysterious charge.
