About this work
A dark, tiered monument rises at the center of a snow-covered square, its statue silhouetted against a warm pink sky. Bare trees with heavily textured branches frame the view on both sides, opening onto a row of pale ochre and grey buildings along the far edge of the square. Small dashes of color scattered among the trees suggest passersby moving through the space.
The work is built almost entirely from thick, knife-applied paint, with ridges of white and grey standing in for snow and dense clusters of brown and rust strokes forming the trees. The pink sky and warm building facades contrast with the cooler greys of the monument and snow, giving the small scene real depth despite its size. The heavy impasto and compressed view create an intimate, atmospheric impression of a familiar city square.
