About this work
The composition is a tight close-up of a bearded man's face and raised hand, fingers resting against a wooden cross in the upper left corner. His eyes are wide and fixed forward, brows drawn, and a plain rounded collar at the bottom suggests armor or vestment beneath the thick, wavy hair framing the face.
The palette is almost entirely grayscale, broken by patches of tan and ochre across the cheek and brow that read like torn or overlaid fragments within the skin itself. Fine cross-hatched lines model the hair, beard, and wrinkles with graphic precision, and the direct, unblinking gaze combined with the fractured surface gives the portrait an intense, watchful presence.
