About this work
A rugged mountain peak, its rock face streaked with snow and ice, rises between two steep valley walls under a heavy bank of grey clouds. A dense line of dark green fir trees stretches across the middle ground, giving way to a foreground meadow scattered with small wildflowers in pink, yellow, and blue.
Deep umber and violet washes model the bare rock, set against crisp white left in reserve for the snow, while the clouded sky is built from soft grey-blue bleeds. The firs are laid in with quick, dark vertical strokes and the meadow with loose dabs of color, together giving the watercolor a brooding, high-altitude drama.
