About this work
A solitary figure, rendered almost as a silhouette in deep umber and black, stands facing away from the viewer against a loosely brushed backdrop of cream, ochre and pale blue. The body and setting are barely differentiated from one another, with no clear ground line, horizon, or identifiable objects beyond the vague suggestion of drapery or a garment falling around the legs.
The paint is applied in thick, cracked impasto, with palette-knife ridges and scraped passages that give the surface a rough, sculptural quality. Warm browns and burnt oranges dominate, set off by bright whitish patches that read as light breaking through, while cool blue and violet touches appear at the upper edges. The overall effect is murky and enigmatic, closer to gestural abstraction than descriptive figure painting.
