Afternoon

A broad meadow of tall golden-green grass fills the foreground, running back to a dense stand of birches and other trees. Between the trunks, glimpses of small wooden huts with pitched roofs are tucked into the shade, while above the treeline a wide sky is dominated by massed white cumulus clouds building against patches of pale blue.

Fine, even brushwork renders individual grass blades and leaves with careful naturalistic detail, while the clouds are built up in soft, rounded volumes of white and grey. Warm yellow-greens in the sunstruck field balance the cooler shadow within the trees, and the overall effect is quiet, still, and closely observed summer daylight.
