About this work
Rolling green and brown hills fold into a shallow ravine with a stream bed running through the middle distance; a dark silhouette of a small church with a single tree stands on the crest of the highest hill. Patches of tilled earth, scrub, and grassy slope alternate across the terrain, leading the eye back toward the clouded skyline.
Heavy, billowing clouds in white, grey and near-black dominate the upper half of the canvas, their weight pressing down on the hills below. Thick strokes and a muted earth-toned palette of olive, ochre and umber give the landscape a brooding, dramatic tension, as if the storm has just passed and the light is still unsettled.
