About this work
A large wooden mask with elongated eyes, a long ridged nose, and rows of small diamond patterns fills most of the upper canvas, overlapping a second, paler mask at lower right. Scattered around them are pressed leaf shapes, small colored discs, and a patchwork of checkered and striped fabric fragments, all set against a deep red ground with angular, fractured planes of maroon and ochre.
Earthy browns, rust reds, and cream highlights are built up with visible, textured brushwork that echoes the carved surfaces of the masks themselves. The fragmented, overlapping planes and warm, saturated palette give the image an intense, ritualistic charge, mixing still-life objects with an almost cubist sense of space.
