About this work
A nude woman sits at the top of the composition, chin resting on her hand in thought, her body curving down into a long sinuous form that coils around itself before ending in a second, crouching figure whose head is bowed to the ground. A serpent's tail curls in the upper left corner, echoing the entwined shape of the two bodies below.
Fine etched stippling models the pale skin against a rough, rock-like dark ground, the dense black background pressing close around the figures. The serpentine merging of the two bodies and the coiled tail give the print a strange, unsettling intimacy fitting its Adam-and-Eve subject.
