About this work
Figures walk single file along a raised wooden walkway laid across a flooded Venetian square, water spreading in sheets across the paving on both sides. A colonnaded building with arched windows rises on the right, while pink lampposts and, in the distance across the water, the dome of a church punctuate the grey skyline.
The scene is painted in soft, damp greys, pale pinks, and muted greens, with the wet stone doubling every shape in blurred reflection.
