About this work
A ballerina in a pale tutu stands en pointe beside a bare-chested male dancer in a gold and silver patterned tunic, his arm raised to meet hers as they turn together. Behind them a personified moon labeled Gaia and a personified sun labeled Uranus watch from opposite corners, linked by threads of small stars across a dark ground, above a gilded floor edged with a black scroll pattern.
The palette is restrained, mostly black, gold, silver and pale blue, with metallic surfaces catching light on the dancers' costumes and the celestial discs. Firm outlines, flattened space and symbolic emblems give the piece a decorative, allegorical character rather than a literal theatre scene.
