About this work
A raised, sculptural composition spans a wide horizontal format, centered on a bearded man in a white draped robe standing among slender blue tree trunks with arms outstretched. Around him nude men and women dance, play flute and drums, and recline on the ground, while at both outer edges bare-chested figures wrestle or ride alongside a lion and a spotted leopard, framed by dark foliage.
Built up with thick modeled paint and applied paper to create genuine relief, the surface reads almost like carved stone, its blues, ochres and dusty pinks set against a deep indigo-black ground. Beaded borders and patterned trim edge the central field, reinforcing the frieze-like, ceremonial rhythm of the composition. The overall effect is that of an ancient bacchanal brought into raised, tactile relief.
