About this work
A street lined with multi-story houses recedes under overhanging dark trees, their windows glowing yellow and orange against deep blue-black shadow. In the foreground a long puddle or gutter cuts across the road, catching a pale, glowing reflection of the streetlights above.
Built up in heavy pastel strokes of blue, black, and ochre with a scratched-in white highlight for the reflected light, the drawing favors bold tonal contrast over fine detail. The rough, gestural marking and deep shadow give the empty night street a hushed, faintly melancholic stillness.
