About this work

A vast bank of grey-blue storm clouds fills most of the canvas, rolling low over a calm, pale sea; a faint curtain of rain can be seen falling toward the water beneath the darkest mass. A low, tree-covered headland juts into the sea from the right edge, and a scatter of small white gulls lines the shoreline in the foreground.

The palette stays close to cool greys, blue-greys and off-white, with only the headland's dull greens and a sliver of warm light on the horizon breaking the chill. Soft, blended brushwork dissolves the clouds into one another, while the sea and beach are laid in with thinner, calmer strokes, giving the scene a hushed, waiting tension before the weather breaks.
