About this work

A retro wallpaper patterned with interlocking taupe hexagons and cream ovals fills the square canvas, discolored by faint brown water stains. At its center a ragged, roughly oval patch of paper has been torn away, exposing a mottled underlayer of blue, yellow, grey and pink smudges whose irregular shape recalls a postage stamp's perforated edge.

The muted taupe and cream geometry of the wallpaper sets off the small burst of saturated color at the torn opening, the composition's one point of chromatic interest. Thin, dry brushwork renders the paper's frayed edges and old stains with near-photographic detail, while flat, even light keeps the surrounding pattern quiet. The result reads as a deadpan study of decay and hidden color.
