About this work
Shown in profile with eyes shut, a bearded man presses his own hand flat against his cheek and temple, fingers spread as if straining to listen. His ear is painted as a stylized blue-and-pink spiral. His other hand, near his throat, pinches a thin stick between two fingers, and he wears a rough, patched shirt in warm ochre tones.
Loose, wet washes of ochre, grey and blue-black build the head and hair, broken by raw red patches on the cheek and neck that read as flushed skin. The paper's texture and faint pencil lines remain visible beneath the pigment, giving the watercolor a raw, unfinished tension.
