About this work
A small stone bridge with an arched opening and urn-topped balustrades crosses a quiet pond, with a paved path curving away on either bank. Behind it a dense screen of trees in full autumn color rises against a pale sky, their birch trunks showing white through the yellow and orange foliage, and a strip of green lawn runs along the near shore.
The whole scene is built from fine, radiating strokes of oil pastel in gold, orange, ochre and green that give the foliage and its reflection a woven, textural surface. The bridge stands out as a cool grey-white form against the warm mass of trees, doubled in a softened mirror image on the water below. The effect is rich and decorative, saturated with the color of a park in autumn.
