About this work
A head and shoulders portrait shows a young face with dark hair looking directly out, set within a heavily worked brown and ochre ground. The face itself is built from warm ochre and umber tones scumbled thin over visible canvas weave, giving it a worn, faded quality. Sharp, opaque flecks of primary color sit on top of the muted ground, creating a fragmented, dreamlike layering that softens the directness of the gaze.
