About this work
The outline of a broad, single flatfish, resembling a flounder or plaice, spans almost the entire sheet, its body oriented diagonally with a small tail fin at one corner. Both the fish's body and the surrounding background are covered edge to edge in the same dense field of small decorative motifs, so the creature is legible mainly through its contour and a faint central seam suggesting a spine.
Countless small daubs, rings, stripes and dots in ochre, olive, rose and teal are packed together like pebbles or cells, picked out with fine white linear strokes. The overall effect is closer to a textile or mosaic pattern than a naturalistic depiction, giving the fish a quiet, meditative, decorative surface.
