About this work
Two children lie asleep together on a pillow, one nestled against the other's shoulder, their bare feet visible at the bottom edge. Around them, flattened cartoonish shapes drift through the dark red field: a blue elephant, a grinning white lion, a rooster, sheep-like animals, a loaf of bread and round polka-dot forms, as if picturing the sleepers' dream.
The sleeping figures are painted with soft realism in warm browns and creams, while the surrounding dream imagery is flattened into graphic, stencil-like silhouettes in white, blue and red against near-black ground. The contrast between tender, modeled bodies and the flat, playful icons around them creates a hushed, imaginative mood.
