About this work

A heavy-jowled dog rests its front paws over the lid of an ornately carved wooden chest, gazing off to the side while a small bird perches on the chest's rim beside it. Behind them, leafy plants fill the foreground and a village scene — a house, a domed bell tower, and rooftops — recedes into the middle distance.

The etching's fine, tightly packed hatching gives the dog's loose skin and the chest's carved scrollwork a tactile, almost velvety texture, while the background architecture is sketched more loosely in open line. The quiet, warm-toned composition reads as a small, affectionate genre vignette rather than a formal portrait.
