About this work
A cluster of young men and women in summer clothes spray each other with hoses and a bucket of water in an open square, caught mid-motion with arms raised and faces contorted in laughter or shock. Behind them rises a monumental building and a bronze statue of a man on a pedestal, one arm outstretched over the scene.
Arcs of spray are rendered as thick white and grey drips layered over the figures, giving the surface a translucent, unfinished quality against the more solidly painted bodies. Cool blue-grey daylight and splashing water dominate, producing an energetic, playful street scene charged by the watching monument's silent presence.
