About this work
A bare-chested, curly-haired man stands with arms crossed over his stomach, his skin covering with small embedded illustrations — a sailing ship, tiny running figures, a star, and other emblematic scenes — as if his body carries an entire voyage within it. Behind him the whole field is filled with banded ornamental patterns of waves, spirals, and meanders.
Executed in fine etched line without color, the print builds its imagery entirely through dense hatching and repeated decorative bands, giving the figure a weathered, almost weary expression against the busy, textile-like background. The layered miniature scenes and Greek-key motifs lend the piece a symbolic, mythological charge tied to its title.
