About this work
Jagged plates of ice crowd the surface of the river in the foreground, piled and overlapping in sharp, angular shapes. Beyond them a low embankment carries a row of buildings, and the golden dome of a great cathedral catches the light against a pale, softly clouded sky.
The palette is almost entirely cool - whites, pale blues and lilac shadows - with the dome's warm gold the single accent of color in the scene. Broad, confident strokes and palette-knife-like passages build the broken ice into a crystalline texture, while the distant architecture is kept soft and hazy, giving the painting a crisp, luminous winter clarity.
