About this work

Two church buildings crowd a narrow passage, one topped by a cylindrical drum and conical roof on the left, the other by a stepped gable with a small cross and pitched dark roofs on the right. In the sunlit gap between them a figure in a long black robe stands before an arched doorway marked with a carved cross, dwarfed by the pale stone walls around it.

Bright cobalt sky shows through the gap above the rooftops, contrasting with the chalky white and ochre stonework rendered in broad, dry, textured strokes. Strong sunlight carves the walls into sharp triangles of light and shadow, and the small dark figure against the glowing stone gives the space a hushed, contemplative stillness.
