About this work
A shaved-headed young man fills the canvas in tight close-up, his bust cut off below the shoulders and set against black. His pale, sallow face stares out with an unflinching gaze, brow furrowed and lips parted, while lines of cursive red-orange Cyrillic script drift across the darkness on either side of his head like whispered fragments of speech or prayer.
The skin is built in warm ochre and olive glazes, with visible brushwork around the eyes and jaw against a flat matte black ground. The red script is painted with a loose, calligraphic hand, its warm color the only note against the darkness besides the face. The stark contrast and cryptic text give the image a hushed, enigmatic charge.
