About this work
A tight bouquet of yellow and cream roses, their petals ruffled and half-open, fills the center of the canvas above dark green foliage. The flowers are set in an unseen vessel suggested only by a pale rim at lower right, against a warm ochre-brown ground on the left and a lighter, whitish drape on the right.
Thick, buttery strokes of yellow, cream, and touches of orange build the rose heads, while near-black shadows define the leaves and gaps between blooms. Warm golden light falls across the flowers from the left, and the vigorous, textured brushwork gives the bouquet a lively, sunlit warmth.
