About this work
The drawing frames a young woman's head and shoulders, her dark hair parted at the center and covered by a red-patterned kerchief tied beneath her chin. She looks directly out at the viewer with a steady, level gaze, one earring visible, her collar and shoulders left in loose unfinished pencil outline against the blank paper.
Color pencil builds the face in layered strokes of ochre, rose and umber, with darker hatching defining the brows, eyes and full mouth. The kerchief's pattern is rendered in flatter patches of red, pink and violet, contrasting with the naturalistic modeling of the skin. The overall effect is quiet and searching, an intimate academic character study.
