About this work
The upper body of a nude woman is drawn in three-quarter view, head cropped out of frame, one arm raised so the hand disappears above the top edge of the sheet. The figure is built mainly from light contour lines, with the torso, hips and beginning of the legs left as open, unfinished outline.
Graphite establishes the structure while touches of red, ochre, violet and bright yellow colored pencil mark the shoulder, side and hip, leaving most of the pale paper bare. The spare, exploratory line and restrained color give the drawing the quiet, searching feel of a life-study sketch.
