About this work
From a raised vantage point, the view looks down across rooftops, fences, and scattered wooden houses toward a river cutting through the valley floor, its dark open water breaking through drifted ice and snow. Frost-laced trees and shrubs cluster along the near slope and riverbank, a small figure and horse-drawn sledge cross a path in the middle distance, and open fields fade toward a pale horizon.
Built up in pastel with soft, broken strokes, the scene favors cool violet-blue shadows across the snow set against warm ochre and rust accents on the roofs and bare branches. The layered, granular texture and diffused light convey the hush of a bright, cold winter day over the settlement.
