About this work
In a low, vaulted cellar a man bends over an old wooden wine press, his back to the viewer as he works grapes into a tub. Barrels are stacked to the left, coiled rope and tools hang on the far wall, and worn stone steps rise toward an open doorway at the back.
A single shaft of daylight falls down the staircase, picking out the warm stone and the man's bare torso while the rest of the room sinks into deep brown shadow. The paint is handled smoothly with soft edges, and the strong light-dark contrast gives the humble scene a quiet, dramatic weight.
