About this work
A tangle of dark, wind-bent branches crosses pale, wind-blown foliage that fills nearly the whole canvas; patches of lavender-grey sky show through gaps at the upper edge, while the lower foreground dissolves into loose golden-brown underbrush. No figures or paths interrupt the dense, close-up view of the grove.
Built almost entirely from a palette-knife application of ivory, ash-grey, and umber, the surface stands in thick ridges that catch real light and mimic the choppy motion of leaves in gusting wind. Touches of violet and pale blue break through where sky is visible. The heavy, sculptural texture and restless rhythm of the strokes convey the force of wind moving through the trees rather than calm description of them.
