About this work
The composition is a tight crop of a wooden wall or shutter, built from vertical planks in warm ochre and honey tones. A dark, almost black horizontal beam crosses the middle, while a pale unpainted plank cuts diagonally through the lower section and a second, darker board angles across the top corner, suggesting boards nailed over a window opening.
Rendered in warm browns, ochres and grey-blacks with touches of chalky ground showing through, the surface is built with dry, scumbled strokes mimicking raw wood grain and old nail stains. The tight cropping and diagonal beams flatten the image into bands of color, giving the humble subject a quiet, almost abstract stillness.
